The Quadrant

The Quadrant is an Innovation Centre for local businesses within the South Sheffield area.  The scheme was won through a design competition for Manor & Castle Development Trust.

The Client’s brief called for a progressive modern design which could be efficiently split down into varying sized units for different tenant requirements.  Garnett Netherwood’s  winning scheme proposed two linear buildings each with a central ‘street’ that acts as a focal point for access, meeting and social areas as well as providing natural daylight and ventilation. The main entrance is sited next to the terracotta clad rotunda which, as well as containing exhibition and conference facilities, provides a strong focal point for tenants and visitors arriving at the site.

The elavations utilise terracotta cladding and high performance glazing. The buildings are orientated north south on the site with extensive brise-soleil to prevent excessive solar gain at key times of year.  Roof mounted photovoltaic panels provide 20% of the building’s daily requirement during the summer months. Ventilation of the office units is mixed mode – natural ventilation utilising the ‘street’ as a thermal buffer space supplemented by fan coil units if tenants require them.
