Silcoates Music School

Won through a competition in early 2001, Garnett Netherwood were commissioned in 2002 to design a new music school for the Silcoates school campus, situated in Wrenthorpe near Wakefield.

In plan the music school curves away from the existing school hall, providing 11 practice rooms either side of a central spine corridor with larger Rehearsal and teaching spaces at either end of the corridor.

In elevation, the building has a solid base of brickwork, chosen to match the existing school buildings, above this, the elevation materials are a lighter and more contemporary Larch timber cladding, extending from the window heads up to the zinc monopitch roof.  Internally a lot of design work went into the acoustic properties of the internal partitions to ensure that rooms could be used without any sound transference from surrounding practice rooms.
